Grinols’ School-Record Board Work Leads Lady Wildcats to Win

When Greg Stephens called a timeout with 2:11 left in the game and Trigg County up by 27 points, the Lady Wildcat players wondered what was up.

Veyda Grinols had grabbed a missed shot, and the ball found A.J. Navarro for a 3-pointer. It turned out that the rebound was the 28th of the game for Grinols, which broke a 35-year-old single-game school record. At first, the players were incredulous and then congratulated their teammate.

The record was part of Trigg County’s 59-33 season-opening win at Fulton City on Friday.

Eighteen of Grinols’ 28 rebounds were on the offensive glass, and 14 came in the second quarter.

The sophomore guard also scored 16 points and added four assists and four steals to her stat line.

Trigg County never trailed in the contest, leading 13-6 after one quarter and 29-15 at halftime. Their largest lead was 27 points late in the contest.

One reason for Trigg County’s 66-30 advantage on the glass was 83 shot attempts, of which Trigg grabbed 60% of their own missed shots. Thirty-four of Trigg’s rebounds were on the offensive end, which led to 16 second-chance points.

Trigg’s 66 rebounds were six short of tying the 1991 school record.

Sophomore A.J. Navarro had her best game as a Lady Wildcat with 20 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Cali Jones also had a double-double for Trigg County with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Fulton City (0-1) got 16 points from Desarae Johnson, and Ashlyn Virgin added six points and 10 rebounds.

Trigg County improved to 14-0 all-time against Fulton City and 25-13 against First District schools.

The Lady Wildcats will play at Kenwood in Clarksville on Saturday afternoon.
