With his team trailing by nine points midway through the second quarter, Tyreek Anthony took over the game to get Fort Campbell even with Trigg County and then teamed with others to hold off the Wildcats for the 74-62 win.

Down 29-20, Anthony scored 10 of Fort Campbell’s next 12 points to even the game at 32 at halftime.

Anthony and Garrett Vanatta combined to score all 18 of Fort Campbell’s third quarter points as the Falcons extended their lead to 50-40.

Trigg County made just one field goal over the final 5:49 of the quarter as the Falcons outscored the Wildcats 13-3 to end the frame.

Employing the ‘Hack a Shaq’ strategy of fouling Fort Campbell each trip down the floor, Trigg County chipped away at the lead and had the ball down 65-58 with 1:31 left. But Trigg missed two 3-pointers and turned the ball over, and Fort Campbell extended its lead to 73-59.

Anthony finished with 37 points and nine rebounds for the Falcons, and Vanatta added 17 points as Fort Campbell shot 45% from the floor in the second half.

While the Falcons were shooting better after halftime, Trigg County was shooting itself in the foot with 27 turnovers, which led to 23 points for Fort Campbell. Trigg didn’t commit fewer than six turnovers in any quarter.

The Wildcats made 13 of 24 shots in the first half, but 15 turnovers kept the Falcons in the game. Trigg also lost the battle of the boards, 36-35, as the Falcons had 17 offensive rebounds, which led to 19 second-chance points.

Davaree Gude led the Wildcats with 18 points and nine rebounds. Landon Swann added 16 points and eight rebounds.

Fort Campbell improved to 2-1 and snapped a five-game losing streak to Trigg County. The Falcons will host Hopkinsville on Wednesday in the district opener for both teams.

The game was played in Trigg County’s middle school gym, as athletic officials announced on Tuesday that renovations to Wildcat Gym are running behind schedule. They are hopeful to return to the big gym in early January. It was the first time in 14 years that Trigg played a high school game in its middle school gym.

Trigg County will play at unbeaten Murray on Friday in a Class 2A sectional game.
