Trigg County missed 11 of its first 12 three-point attempts on Friday, but back-to-back treys from Alexis Mayes and Veyda Grinols to begin the fourth quarter sparked the Lady Wildcats to a 46-38 win at Murray.

The Lady Tigers ended the first quarter on an 8-2 run to grab a lead they wouldn’t relinquish until Mayes’ three gave Trigg a 30-29 lead, and Grinols extended it to 33-29 a minute later.

Murray got to within two points twice, the last time at 35-33 with 5:16 left. Cali Jones came alive to score six points in a decisive 8-1 run that solidified Trigg’s first win over Murray in three years.

Grinols recorded her third straight double-double to begin the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Lady Wildcats. Jones added 16 points and seven rebounds, with 14 points coming in the second half. A.J. Navarro scored nine points and had three assists.

Trigg was outbounded for the first time this season, 32-29, but turned 19 Murray turnovers into 19 points while committing a season-low 10 turnovers.

Murray had two players score in double figures, led by Mayla Smith’s 17 points. Addison Neal added 12 points and 14 rebounds.

Trigg could have extended its lead, but hit just 4 of 12 free throws in the second half and 5 of 18 for the game.

The Lady Wildcats snapped a three-game losing streak to Murray, who still leads the all-time series 10-6. Trigg has won more games in Murray (four) than in Cadiz (two) in the series dating back to 1981.

The 46-38 final score was a Trigg County Scorigami, the first time a Lady Wildcat basketball game ended with that score.

The 3-0 start for Trigg County is its first in four years. Getting to 4-0 will be a challenging task for the Lady Wildcats, who play at Stewart County, Tenn., on Monday. The Rebels are 9-1 and have never lost to Trigg County in seven career meetings.
