While most observers consider Marshall County or McCracken County the First Region favorites this season, people better not sleep on the Murray Tigers, who used a 25-0 second quarter run to bury Trigg County 93-36 on Friday at Taylor Gymnasium.
After an opening night loss to Lyon County, the Tigers have rolled off four straight wins, topping 90 points in all four.
The Tigers hit what is believed to be a school-record 18 three-pointers in Monday’s win over University Heights Academy and added 13 more against Trigg. However, the death blow to the Wildcats was the Murray defense that forced 25 first-half turnovers and converted them into 37 points.
Already ahead 32-16 in the second quarter, Aidan Armstrong scored 11 straight points for Murray that kick-started a 25-0 run.
The Tigers scored 28 points off of 27 steals for the game, feasting on 35 Trigg turnovers. Murray held a 52-2 advantage in points off turnovers.
Murray also outrebounded the Wildcats 46-25 and scored 20 second-chance points.
The Tigers put four players in double figures, led by Henri Acreman-Nyamwaia’s 18 points. Armstrong and Maddox Mitchell each scored 17 points.
Landon Swann hit four 3-pointers and scored 14 points. Carter Shepherd came off the bench to score 10 points in 14 minutes of action.
The game was the first between the schools in 13 years and the 47th dating back to 1949. Murray leads the series 30-17 and hasn’t lost to Trigg County on its home floor since 1975. The 93 points scored by Murray are the most against the Wildcats.
Trigg County will play at Stewart County, Tenn., on Monday. They will play at Russellville on Tuesday, with the game scheduled for their elementary school gym.
