Trigg County tried to overcome every statistical obstacle thrown at them on Tuesday, but in the end, the Lady Wildcats couldn’t make it work where it counted the most – the scoreboard, as they lost to St. Mary 51-48 in overtime.
Despite the inadequacies in shooting (13 of 32 in the paint and 4 of 24 behind the arc) and turnovers (30 that led to 22 St. Mary points), Trigg County had its shots down the stretch to overcome the adversity.
Nursing a one-point lead with 3:11 left, Trigg turned the ball over at midcourt on consecutive possessions that St. Mary converted into easy buckets and a 41-38 lead.
Neither team could score in the next 1:30, and St. Mary hit a free throw to go up 42-38 with 34 seconds left.
Veyda Grinols made two free throws with 18 seconds left, but fouled out of the game on the inbounds.
After St. Mary hit one of two free throws, Trigg called a timeout with 14 seconds left, down 43-40.
A.J. Navarro hit a 3-pointer at the top of the key with six seconds left to tie the game. She then stole the inbounds pass and was fouled with two seconds left. However, she missed both free throws, and the game went to overtime.
St. Mary never trailed in the extra period, leading by as many as five points.
Trigg County outrebounded St. Mary 53-42 and pulled down 27 offensive boards, but converted them into just 13 points.
The rebound margin and turning 27 St. Mary turnovers into 22 points kept Trigg in the game while they were shooting 23% from the field.
Cali Jones led the Lady Wildcats with 10 points and 16 rebounds. Grinols had 11 points, 19 rebounds, and six steals, and Navarro added 13 points and five steals.
Seventh grader Annabelle O’Neill led all scorers with 23 points for the Lady Vikings, who have won three straight games after an 0-2 start.
Alana Thomas added 10 points and 17 rebounds for St. Mary.
Tuesday’s game was the first home game of the season for the Lady Wildcats and was played in the middle school gym while renovation work continues at the high school gym.
Trigg County will host West Creek on Friday in the first game between the schools.
On Monday, Trigg County traveled to Stewart County, Tenn., and suffered its first loss of the season, 60-29.
Stewart County improved to 8-0 all-time against Trigg County.
Veyda Grinols and Cali Jones each scored 10 points for the Lady Wildcats, while Stewart County (9-1) got a game-high 20 points from Faith Dycus.
