University Heights Academy picked up a big early-season win at Union County on Friday, topping the Braves 74-68 behind a 34-point performance from KeShawn Moore.
Union County’s Daishawn Curry did his best to keep pace with Moore, knocking down a pair of threes on the way to nine first-quarter points. However, Moore scored five and Jaiden Miles added four to give the Blazers an early 13-12 advantage.
Curry and Moore canceled each other out with seven points each in the second, but Hayden Mills connected on a trio of three-pointers to lead Union County to a 36-31 halftime lead.
Moore hit the ground running in the second half with 10 third-quarter points, but Jace Wilson and Curry combined for 12 of the Braves’ 19 points to stretch the margin to six points with a quarter to play.
Curry capped a 33-point night with 11 in the fourth. He connected on six three-pointers, and Mills hit five to finish with 15 points. But it wouldn’t be enough to hold off the Blazers, led by two threes and 11 points from Moore and seven from Hayden Hunt. UHA outscored the Union 20-13 down the stretch to win for the first time in the last three in the series with the Braves.
Moore’s big night led all scorers, joined in double figures for UHA by Hunt with 13 and Miles with 11.
Curry led the way for the Braves, followed by Mills with 15 and Wilson with 10.
The Blazers won for the third time in their last four to even their record at 3-3. They’ll return the court after Christmas when they face Atherton and DeSales at the Faupel Automotive Group – Colonel Basketball Classic at Henderson County on December 27 and 28.
Union County dropped its third straight to slip to 3-3 ahead of a matchup with Hickman County at the Hardwood Classic at Calloway County on Monday.
