The Trigg County Wildcats faced off against Carlisle at the St. Mary Christmas Classic on Friday night, where they were hoping to snap their losing streak. But they were unable to do that, as they ended up losing to the Comets 78-47.
Both teams got off to a slow start in the first quarter, as Carlisle was up just 6-3 halfway through the opening period. But it was not for a lack of trying, as both teams were putting up shots from beyond the arc.
Carter Shephard was able to make two threes in the quarter, but the Wildcats were only able to score three more points other than that, going down 14-9 at the end of the first.
The Comets got off to a better start in the second quarter, much to the dismay of the Wildcats. They started the period out 8-0, and the run was only stopped by a layup from Clay Travis. But what that didn’t stop was Carlisle going up 24-11 at a timeout with three minutes left.
An and-one three from Landon Swann gave the Wildcats a bit of juice, but turnovers were just too much of a problem, and they went down 30-17 going into the halftime break.
Swann was once again able to get hot from beyond the arc, hotting two shots from there in the early part of the third quarter. Trigg’s scoring got more consistent after halftime, but Carlisle was able to keep up, and they took a 54-37 lead into the final period.
The Comets went on an 11-2 run to start the fourth quarter, and they outscored the Wildcats 15-5 in the first four minutes. Trigg then put their subs into the game to get them some playing time. And while they were able to get some buckets and make some good plays, Carlisle was easily able to finish Trigg off 78-47.
The Wildcats have only faced off against Carlisle five times in school history, and they have yet to beat the Comets.
The leading scorer for Trigg in the game was Swann with 14 points behind three three-pointers. Shephard was also able to get some long bombs to go and score 10 points of his own.
They will be hoping to get back on track when they face off with the Storm of Hopkins County Central on Saturday. This will be the next round of the St. Mary Christmas Classic, and is scheduled to tip off at 2 p.m.
