Both Trigg County and Hopkins County Central lost in the first round of the St. Mary Christmas Classic, but it was the Storm who was able to bounce back with a 71-37 victory over the Wildcats.

The Storm started the game off turning the ball over a few times, but that did not stop them from going up 10-8 at a timeout with three minutes left to play.

Then immediately out of that timeout, Central’s Davonyae Butcher was able to hit a three, and that helped them extend their lead to 21-12 by the end of the first.

Trigg’s offense left a lot to be desired in the second period, scoring just three points, all of those coming from Davaree Gude.

A three from Blaze Sumner kicked off the scoring for Hopkins Central, and their lead only grew from there. It was 28-14 halfway through the quarter, and it extended all the way to 36-15 by the end of the half.

The third quarter was much better for the Wildcats, as they were able to score 12 compared to the three they scored in the second. This was helped by Landon Swann’s eight points in the period.

But that was not enough to keep up with the Storm, because they were able to score 19, which was just behind the first quarter for their most points in a period. They were able to get hot from three to extend their lead to 30 at one point, and they ended the quarter with a 55-27 lead.

After that, all the Hopkins Central subs had to do when they came in was hold the lead, and that is exactly what they were able to do. The final buzzer sounded with Central getting a commanding 71-37 win.

Hopkins Central now leads the all-time series against Trigg 16 games to 12, and they have won the past two meetings with the Wildcats, both in dominant fashion.

The leading scorer for the Storm was Devante Jagoe with 15 points, while Butcher was also able to put in 14 of his own with a couple threes. Sumner and Samari Pettus also scored in the double-digits with 11 and 10, respectively.

As for the Wildcats, their leading scorer was Swann with 16, and he was able to make an impressive four threes over the course of the game. Gude was also able to contribute nine points of his own.

Trigg will be looking to break their losing streak after a break for Christmas in their next game on Monday, January 5, against Fulton City. The game will be played at 7:30 p.m. at Trigg County.

On the other side, Hopkins Central will be hoping to start another win streak in their next one against South Fulton on Monday, December 22. That game will also be played at St. Mary as part of the Christmas Classic at 2 p.m.
