
Caldwell County’s girls have won four of their last five games after tripping Springfield, Tennessee, 54-47 Friday afternoon in a back-and-forth contest at Logan County.
The Lady Tigers led by 11 at halftime, but trailed by one entering the fourth quarter in the first round contest in the H&H Holiday Hoopfest.
However, Caldwell (5-3) outscored the Yellow Jackets 16-8 in the final frame to pull out the tournament win.
Next up for the Lady Tigers is McCracken County (6-3) in the semifinals Saturday afternoon at 2:00.
Med Thomas had 17 points and was named the Player of the Game. Tink Clark added 16 for Caldwell in the win over Springfield. Audrey McCoy also scored in double figures with 11 points.
Zay Farmer and Taleah Patterson each had 15 points to lead Springfield (9-3).
The two teams were tied 10-10 after one period on Friday before the Lady Tigers got to halftime with a 27-16 advantage.
However, the Yellow Jackets flipped things around in the third quarter to go in front 39-38.
Caldwell outscored Springfield by 18 points at the free throw line. The Lady Tigers were 20 of 28 at the stripe while the Yellow Jackets finished 2 for 8.
The game was the first meeting between the two schools.
It was the Lady Tigers’ first game against a Tennessee school since Dec. 22, 2018, when Caldwell fell to Dyer County, Tennessee, in tournament action at Marshall County.
The last time the Lady Tigers faced any out-of-state team was last December, when Caldwell’s girls lost to South Panola from Batesville, Mississippi, in the West Kentucky Hoops Classic.
