Already playing without its leading scorer, Trigg County lost its number two scorer and leading rebounder in a 62-37 loss to Stewart County in the first round of the host school’s Holiday Classic Saturday night in Dover.

Trigg was without Landon Swann (14.5 ppg.) and lost Davaree Gude two minutes into the contest when he left with a sprained ankle and did not return.

The Wildcats gave a valiant effort in the first half before the Rebels got hot from behind the arc in the third quarter.

The game featured five lead changes in the first half, but Stewart County closed the second quarter on a 9-2 run to take a 23-15 lead into intermission.

The Rebels, who missed 10 of 13 three-pointers in the first half, knocked down six of eight behind the arc in the third quarter as they scored more points in the third quarter (24) than in the first half (23).

Stewart County finished 10 of 23 behind the line and shot 14 of 29 from the field in the final two quarters.

Trigg County used a more deliberate tempo, relying more on 2-pointers (11/36) than on 3-pointers (2/8).

Cam McCormick came off the bench to get career highs in points (12) and rebounds (11), part of a Trigg bench effort that outscored Stewart County 22-20.

Carter Shepherd added five points and six rebounds, and Zammarion Broussard scored seven points.

Turnovers were again a bugaboo for the Wildcats, as 23 miscues led to 28 Stewart County points. Trigg also missed 15 shots in the paint, with five coming during Stewart County’s third-quarter surge.

Trigg outrebounded Stewart County 34-26 and had 10 second-chance points.

Kyrick Wallace led Stewart County (6-8) with 20 points, and freshman Nathan Timmins added 11 points.

Trigg County (2-8) will play Rossview in the consolation semifinals Monday afternoon at 2:00 at Stewart County.
