For the second year in a row, the Lyon County Lady Lyons have won the Kelly Holiday Classic. The Lady Lyons rode a big night from Piper Cotham to the tournament championship Monday night, knocking off 5th-ranked Boyd County 61-56, handing the Lady Lions their first loss to a Kentucky team this season.
Cotham scored 9 points in the opening quarter as Lyon County took a 12-9 lead after the first eight minutes.
Cotham continued her hot start in the second quarter, scoring 7 more points as Lyon County extended the lead to 29-11. Courtney Collins added 5 points in the quarter for the Lady Lyons.
After going without a three in the first half, Boyd County knocked down four in the third quarter as they made a move to get back in the game. Jada Ray scored 11 points in the quarter as the Lady Lions cut the margin to 45-43 heading into the final eight minutes of the contest.
After being held scoreless in the third, Piper Cotham got going again in the fourth quarter, scoring 12 points, including 4 of 4 at the free throw line, as Lyon County was able to hold Boyd County at bay to take the tournament title. As a team, the Lady Lyons went 6 of 6 at the charity stripe to close out the game.
Cotham finished the night with 28 points to lead Lyon County. Courtney Collins added 12 points. Trinity Taylor, who was held without a field goal in the second half, also hit double figures with 10. Jenna Coursey ended up with six points, all in the second half.
Jada Ray led Boyd County with 25 points. Jylyn Edmonson was also in double figures with 19.
With the win, which was the fifth in the last six games and third in a row, Lyon County improves to 9-3 for the season. Two of the losses have come by a total of four points. The Lady Lyons will open the New Year Friday afternoon on the road at Muhlenberg County.
