Family Time Remains the Real Christmas Magic

Watching my granddaughter, Savana, and grandson, Colby, put together my Christmas snow globe was a memory maker.

As I start a new year — and at my age these years roll around way too quickly — I am appreciative of so much and got a great reminder of that when I spent six days in Sevierville/Pigeon Forge with my family at Hidden Mountain Resort for the second straight Christmas week.

We got to do a lot of the typical things:

— Three went to Hatfield & McCoy Dinner Show that my youngest grandson, Colby, and daughter-in-law, Christy, think is a “have to do” when you visit the Smoky Mountains and they loved the show even more than usual this year.

— Four of us went to Paula Deen’s Lumberjack Feud & Dinner Show and all four of us not only enjoyed the food but also the various skills of the lumberjacks and lumberjills who can do a lot more than just handle a chainsaw. Not only are they skilled, but they know how to entertain and interact with the audience which my two youngest grandsons, Wynston and Colby, really enjoyed. They both got to take home a “cookie” for their fan enthusiasm and my son, Jeremy, was even part of the show with his axe throwing skills.

— Toy Box Mini Golf offered a unique miniature golf challenge that was fun for all ages. What really stood out to me was the finishing hole. This was the first time I saw a version of the TV show Price is Right’s version of the Plinko game on a golf course. Depending on where your ball finally landed after it worked its way down the Plinko board you might have to add a stroke to your score or subtract up to three strokes.

— Go Karts are almost mandatory if you are in Pigeon Forge — or at least it seems that way. All four grandchildren along with my son took a ride or two and it is amazing how much satisfaction any driver gets out of passing another driver.

— Our final day we hit the daily double — MagiQuest and the movies. Tuesday is $5 day at the Pigeon Forge Cinema and MagiQuest might have the best price on the parkway, a $26.99 combo deal (plus tax) for pirate miniature golf, mirror maze and the interactive treasure hunt game that challenges your wit and senses. My granddaughter, Savana, and youngest grandson, Colby, wasted no time getting out of the mirror maze. It took me and my oldest grandson, Cooper, a little “bit” longer.

However, some of the very best moments/memories were the simple family times.

My son and daughter-in-law know that Colby and I love snow globes. They got me one for Christmas that needed to be put together. Obviously, my old fingers were not up to the task but watching Colby and Savana work together to build it was heart-warming and now I proudly have it displayed at home.

Another moment to remember came when grandsons Colby and Wynston got in the bed with me and we watched the San Francisco 49ers hold off the Chicago Bears.

And each morning Savana and Colby got up early so I could take them out for coffee.

Not sure with the ages of my grandchildren that we will have another Christmas week all together as their lives get busier and busier but this one sure was fun.
