After waiting a full week, the Lyon County Lyons now know who they will face late Thursday night in their opening round matchup in the 2026 All A Classic state tournament at the Owensboro Sportscenter. The Mayfield Cardinals laid claim to the 1st Region title Saturday and now stand as the first obstacle in the Lyons’ attempt to return to the championship game.

Mayfield advanced to the state tournament with a 55-43 win over Carlisle County, the Cardinals’ 5th consecutive win.

Mayfield is making its ninth trip to the state tournament and first since 2019. The Cardinals reached the semifinals in 1996 and 2018.

Lyon County is making its third straight trip to the state tournament and fifth in the last six seasons. Overall, it is the 8th trip to the All A Classic state tournament. Last year, the Lyons reached the title game before falling 56-53 to Danville Christian.

In 2024, the Lyons fell to Newport 50-48 in the semifinals. Of course, that Lyon County team would only lose one more game the rest of the season on their way to the KHSAA state championship.

Mayfield is 10-6 with a game on the schedule for Tuesday night at Calloway County. The Cardinal losses have come to Murray, South Warren, Owensboro Catholic, Whitesville Trinity, McCracken County, and Hopkinsville. The Cardinals have won five straight.

Despite not being that far apart in terms of mileage, the two teams have met just once in recent history, on December 29, 2015. Mayfield rolled to a 68-33 win in the game.
