Livingston Central could not overcome a nearly three-minute scoring drought in the third quarter that saw Trigg County go on an 11-0 game-deciding run as part of a 61-54 win on Monday at Wildcat Gym.
Trigg County hit 9 of 12 shots in the third quarter, erasing a one-point halftime deficit, and outscored Livingston 22-10.
Every time Livingston Central would cut into the deficit in the fourth quarter, the Lady Wildcats responded with three key putbacks to keep the Lady Cardinals at bay.
Taylor Leahy knocked down a trio of three-pointers in the fourth quarter, the final one coming with 31 seconds left, that cut the Trigg lead to three. However, the Lady Cardinals would not score again as Trigg hit four free throws inside the final 27 seconds to seal the district win.
Trigg County built a six-point lead midway through the second quarter, only to see Livingston Central answer with eight straight points to grab a two-point lead. While Livingston Central wasn’t hitting shots, they were able to get to the free throw line, which kept them within striking distance.
The Lady Cardinals hit 9 of 12 free throws in the first half and 8 of 12 in the second, but it was not enough to overcome Trigg County’s gargantuan advantage on the glass as the Lady Wildcats out-rebounded Livingston 45-16 and had 11 second-chance points.
Trigg County hit 8 of 20 behind the arc with AJ Navarro and Alivia Norwood combining for six of those. However, Triggs’ season-long turnover issues kept them from putting distance between themselves and Livingston Central. The Lady Wildcats turned the ball over 26 times, which led to 19 Livingston Central points.
In the end, the Lady Wildcats did enough to get their second win in as many games this season at Wildcat Gym. Tuesday was the first of eight straight home games for the Lady Wildcats.
Navarro put together her best stat line of the season with 17 points, 8 rebounds, and a season-high 7 assists. Veyda Grinols added 16 points and 16 rebounds, good for her ninth double-double of the season.
Cali Jones produced her fifth double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
Taylor Leahy led the Lady Cardinals with 17 points before fouling out late. Her older sister, Aubrey, added 13 points and had a team-high six rebounds.
The win moves Trigg County into third place in the district standings, ahead of fourth-place Livingston Central.
Trigg County is back on the hardwood Tuesday night at home against Paducah Tilghman in a 6 o’clock start at Wildcat Gym.
Livingston Central, which hasn’t played a home game in a month, will travel to Webster County on Tuesday.
