The Livingston Central Cardinals used their inside advantage to defeat Trigg County 65-52 on Monday at Wildcat Gym.
The win moves the Cardinals into second place in the district standings behind Lyon County and ahead of third-place Trigg County in what is expected to be the first of three meetings between the teams this season.
Taking advantage of Trigg County’s lack of inside muscle, the Cardinals scored 36 points in the paint and relied heavily on Logan Wring in the second half to keep Trigg County at bay.
Wring, who has surpassed 2,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds this year, scored 15 of his 23 points in the second half and consistently had an answer when Trigg County cut into the Cardinal lead. Wring also pulled down 11 of his 16 rebounds after halftime.
The Cardinals grabbed the lead for good midway through the first quarter and led by as many as 13 points in the first half. Trigg County would cut the Cardinal deficit to five points on two occasions in the second half, only to watch Wring counter with a basket.
Livingston Central’s ability to consistently get into the paint helped them to a 40-24 advantage on the glass and 11 second-chance points. Their paint presence also saw the Cardinals outshoot the Wildcats 27-5 at the free-throw line.
Not helping the Wildcats was a 7-of-35 performance from three-point range. However, 13 points off 14 Livingston turnovers kept them within shooting distance in the second half.
Bryson Walker scored 21 points for the Cardinals, and Avery Zaim had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Landon Swann finished with 19 points and four assists for the Wildcats, while Davaree Gude had 10 points and five assists. Gude was honored before the game for recently grabbing his 500th career rebound. He is also closing in on 1,000 career points.
Carter Shepard continued his strong play off the bench, scoring 11 points and knocking down three 3-pointers in 13 minutes of play.
Livingston Central has won consecutive games for the first time since late December and will play Murray on Tuesday at the Superman Classic at Massac County.
Trigg County looks to get back on the winning track Tuesday night on the road at Heritage Christian Academy. They also have a game scheduled for Friday at Mayfield, though that game could be in doubt, as the Cardinals play in the All A Classic State Tournament Thursday night in Owensboro against Lyon County.
Regardless of what happens on Friday, Trigg County will play Saturday night against Todd County Central in the Chapel Allen Memorial Shootout at Wildcat Gym.
