Looking to put the brakes on a seven-game losing streak and clinging to a slim lead against visiting Dawson Springs on Friday, Madisonville-North Hopkins survived late free-throw attempts to hold on for a 56-55 7th-District victory.

The Maroons were on target from long range to take an early lead, with Orion Underwood connecting on three three-pointers and former Panther Deacon Dever knocking down two for a 15-13 advantage after the first quarter.

Dawson Springs’ Cooper Burge answered with seven points in the second quarter, overcoming five from Madisonville’s Myles Adler, to knot the game at 26-26 at the halftime break.

Dever and Jeremiah Lewis combined for 13 points in the third quarter to help the Maroons build a 43-36 lead with a quarter to play, but the Panthers rallied in search of a rare season sweep.

Madisonville’s Jeremyah Sharp scored five and Underwood and Gavin Oldham combined for eight, but Jayden Plunkette dropped 12 points to finish with a game-high 22 and lead the Panthers’ comeback. Dawson Springs’ Easton Bourland was fouled on a three-point attempt with 1.6 seconds to play, knocking down the first two free-throw attempts before the third bounced off to seal the Maroons’ first district victory.

Underwood led Madisonville with 18 points, and Dever finished with 13.

For the Panthers, Burge and Bourland joined Plunkette in double figures with 10 each.

The Maroons improved to 3-16 ahead of a visit from Adair County on Tuesday, while Dawson Springs dropped its third straight to slip to 5-12.

One Response

  1. It seems that one Maroon player gets pulled from the game every time he commits an error, while other players remain in the game after committing errors. At EVERY practice, Maroons need to spend time on drills that improve shooting, passing, rebounding and defense. The coaches are responsible for teaching and practicing drills that improve these skills.
