SPOTLIGHT ATHLETE – Ava Roberts

If there is a cardio sport at Fort Campbell, you’ll likely find Ava Roberts competing.

The senior swimmer looks for a return trip to the state swimming first round on Monday when she and her Lady Falcon teammates take to the region pool at Hopkinsville High School.

Ava was part of Fort Campbell’s 200-medley relay team last year that finished in third place and the 400-free relay team, which took fourth.

She also finished in fifth place in the backstroke.

However, Ava has added sprints to her swim resume. She recently took first place in the 50-yard freestyle at a three-team meet at Hopkinsville. She also won the backstroke.

Aside from swimming, Ava put together a pair of top 20 finishes at the region level of cross country and twice ran at the state meet. As a sophomore, she qualified for the state track and field meet in the pole vault. However, she has moved on from running to concentrate solely on swimming.

This year, Ava gets to swim with her younger sister, Abby, in the 400-yard free relay. Little sis is taking a similar athletic path as Ava, doubling in cross country and swimming.

Only a seventh grader, Abby finished in fifth place at the region cross country meet and captured a 31st place finish at the state meet.

A good finish in the pool in the 400-yard relay on Monday means the sisters will get at least one more time to swim together in the same event at the state first round.

Once she graduates from Fort Campbell, Ava plans to attend the University of Tennessee and major in nursing.
