The Lyon County Lyons went into their game against Henderson County having won their last 12 games, the last of which was to win the All A State Championship. Their Monday evening game vs. the Colonels was their third game in just over 30 hours, and they lost a close one 53-51.

Henderson started the game hot and got out to a very early 10-3 lead fueled by an and-one and a made three. Bray Kirk then hit a shot from beyond the arc, but the Colonels answered right back on the next possession to keep their lead at seven.

Kirk and Nolan Coffman both hit layups to cut the lead to four and make the score 18-14 going into the second quarter.

Both teams got off to a bit of a slow start in the second, as the first bucket didn’t come until over two minutes in when Isaac Defew was able to make a layup off of a Kirk assist.

But after that, Henderson was able to extend their lead to 22-16, and that was the score for a lot of the period. And going into the locker room, the Lyons remained down 26-18.

The Colonels quickly extended their lead to 12 points in just the first minute of the third quarter, and it was due in no small part to the Lyons turning the ball over more than they would have liked.

The lead stayed in double-digits until Cooper Collins made a couple of. free throws to cut it to eight with about two and a half minutes left. But Henderson was then able to make some free throws and get the lead back to 10, and the quarter ended with a 41-31 score in favor of the Colonels.

But the fourth quarter is where things started to get interesting.

After some Coffman free throws got it back to eight, Kirk forced a turnover that led to a Cooper Collins floater. Coffman was then able to hit a huge shot from deep to cut Henderson’s lead to just three points and get the Lyon crowd pumped up.

Lyon County then cut it to one, and Kirk was then able to force yet another turnover that led to the team taking their first lead with some Coffman free throws.

But on the other end, a foul was called on Coffman that led to a converted and-one by the Colonels. Kirk was fouled with the Lyons down 52-50, but he was not able to make both free throws to tie the game. Lyon was forced to foul, and Henderson made a free throw to make it 53-51.

The Lyons got the ball with five seconds left, but the ball was knocked out of Kirk’s hands and out of bounds with just half a second left. As a result, the team was not able to get a shot off, and their win streak was snapped with a 53-51 loss.

This is now the third time in a row that Henderson has gotten the best of Lyon County, but it is the first time since 2024 that they have done so on the road. And the last time the Lyons lost to the Colonels at home, they went on to not lose a single game the rest of the season.

Coffman led the Lyons in scoring with 18 points, 16 of those coming in the second half. Kirk and Cooper Collins were also able to get into double-digits with 17 and 10, respectively.

The Lyons will be looking to bounce right back in their next game on Thursday, February 5, against the Wildcats of Trigg County. Their game will begin at 6 p.m. at Trigg County High School.
