Otega Oweh is so consistent that it is easy to take what he does for granted.
The Kentucky senior guard has scored in double figures all 22 games this year and is one of 14 players in Division I to reach double figures in each of his team’s games this season. His 55 games in double figures over the last two seasons are tied for second in Division I with Jaron Pierre Jr. of Jacksonville
St./SMU behind only P.J. Haggerty (56) of Memphis/Kansas State.
Oweh is averaging 20.2 points per game in SEC play, ranking sixth
in the conference, going into tonight’s game with Oklahoma. He was the first UK player since Jodie Meeks to have 20 points in each of his first four SEC games in
a season.
“I’ve had the pleasure of being able to compete with him since I got on campus,” UK sophomore Trent Noah said Tuesday. “Last year in the summer, it was just a massacre. He was just taking me to the rim over and over. I didn’t know what to do.
“He’s a good player. I really get to get better from him. I get to guard one of the best players in the SEC, one of the best players in the country, every single day in practice. I feel like that’s a gift.
“He’s a good player. He’s a good friend, good mentor.”
Oweh is coming off a 24-point performance at Arkansas going into tonight’s game against Oklahoma, his former school that he twice hit game-winning shots against last season.
“I feel like he always plays with urgency. He’s such a good player that sometimes it kind of goes under the radar. He’s always guarding an elite guard while doing what he does on the offensive end,” Noah said.
“He does it so effortlessly, just night in and night out. He kind of sometimes gets swept under the rug because it’s just his normal, but what he’s doing is pretty ridiculous, in my opinion.”
Certainly Oklahoma had to believe what he did in UK’s wins last year was “ridiculous” but Noah would not be surprised if Oweh does it again.
“It’s his old team, and he’s just hungry to win. He wants to win every single game, play as hard as he can. He’s just a player that makes plays. He makes plays off script and on script, so you’re never out whenever you have an O on your team,” Noah said.
