The Madisonville-North Hopkins Lady Maroons dropped below .500 with a loss in their last game against the Lady Tigers of Caldwell County. As a result, the team went into their Thursday evening game against Ohio County wanting a win a little bit more than usual.
And that is exactly what they were able to get, and they did so with a very tight 72-69 game that went into two overtime periods.
Madisonville got started early on the offensive end with 21 points in the first quarter. JaMia Harris scored seven, while Macy Wright and Sadie Kirk each scored six to help the team take a 21-12 lead after the first eight minutes.
The second quarter was the Lady Eagles turn for their offense to turn on, as they combatted Madisonville’s 21 in the first with 22 of their own in the second. Lady Maroons’ Taylor Nelson scored eight behind a couple of threes, but that did not stop their lead from shrinking to just three at half.
After some solid play in the first two periods, both teams started out very slow in the third quarter. Despite that, the Lady Maroons were still able to extend their lead a tiny bit by outscoring Ohio County 9-8.
Madisonville scored 10 in the fourth and final quarter, but the Lady Eagles were able to score 14 and tied the game up at the end of regulation.
But not only did the game go to overtime, it then went to overtime yet again after the first five minutes did not decide a winner.
Wright was the driving force for the Lady Maroons in the overtime periods with six points, and that helped Madisonville get the victory to bounce right back after a loss in their last game.
This is now the seventh meeting in a row between Madisonville and Ohio County has gone the way of the Lady Maroons. The last win the Lady Eagles were able to get in the all-time series was back in December of 2013.
Wright led the Lady Maroons in scoring with 21 points, and she was able to get to the charity stripe at will. Harris, Kirk, and Taylor Nelson were also all able to get into double-digits in the game.
Madisonville will be looking to start a win streak in their next game against Daviess County on Tuesday, February 10. The game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at Daviess County High School.
