The Lyon County Lady Lyons had a mountain to climb in their Saturday afternoon game against the undefeated Calloway Lady Lakers. But they were able to accomplish the tough task and hand them their first loss of the season 64-53 at the Akridge Shootout in Eddyville.

Calloway got started off early in the first quarter, getting out to an 8-1 lead after just the first few minutes. Lyon was able to claw back and make it more competitive, going into the second quarter down just 14-10 as a result.

The Lady Lyons started out the next period with a three-pointer from Courtney Collins, but Calloway went on a quick 6-0 run to take back the momentum. Then after some back-and-forth, Lyon went on a run of their own helped by a pair of treys.

Two layups from Calloway’s Sayler Lowe and a bucket from Lyon’s Piper Cotham then made it 26-25 in favor of the Lady Lakers at the half.

Lyon came out of the locker room swinging with a 7-0 run, but Calloway answered back with an even bigger run of their own to give them a one point lead. That lead held until the end of the quarter where the Lady Lakers went into the fourth up 41-40.

Calloway came out of the break in a zone defense that Lyon was able tot take advantage up with a pair of threes and a 9-2 run. And after that, the Lady Lyons did not give the lead back.

The fourth is where Piper Cotham took over with 11 points in the final eight minutes, and that led the Lady Lyons to hand Calloway their first loss of the season.

Not only was this a big win because of the undefeated opponent, but also because it was the first victory the Lady Lyons have gotten against Calloway since January of 2006.

Piper Cotham led Lyon in scoring with 19 points, and 11 of those came when it mattered in the final quarter. Courtney Collins also had an impressive game with 18 points, while Lily Coffman also got into double-digits with 10.

The Lady Lyons will be looking to take that momentum into their next game against the Colonels of Henderson County on Tuesday, February 10. Their game will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Lyon County High School.
