The University Heights Blazers had lost their last game against Caldwell going into their matchup with Mayfield at the Akridge Shootout on Saturday evening at Lyon County High School. However, they were unable to prevent their second straight loss, as the Cardinals got the best of them 63-54.
Mayfield got off to a hot start from beyond the arc with five three-pointers, three of them coming from Owen Byrd. This helped them take a 21-15 lead after the first eight minutes of play.
They slowed down a bit in the second quarter, but unfortunately, so did the Blazers. Hayden Hunt had eight points in the period, but the rest of the team had two, and UHA went down 35-25 at the halftime break.
The third was the first time UHA outscored Mayfield in a quarter, 10-9. Kayn Simmons led the team in scoring with four points in the period, helping the team cut the lead a bit going into the fourth.
The final quarter was hard-fought, as UHA’s KeShawn Moore did all he could with 13 points to get his team back into the game. But it was too late, and the Cardinals were able to close it out and bounce back from a loss in their last game.
In their last five meetings, the Cardinals have won every time.
Moore led the Blazers in scoring with 20 points and was also able to get hot from beyond the arc with three shots made from three. Hunt and Simmons also got into double-digits with 12 points apiece.
They will be looking to help their team bounce back in their next game on Monday, February 9, against Logan County. Their game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. at University Heights Academy.
