Regions 1 and 2 Get Tough Draw for Girls Sweet 16

The winner of next month’s Girls Region 2 Basketball Tournament will play the opening game of the Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Sweet 16 at Rupp Arena.

The tournament opener on Wednesday, March 11, at 11:00 am will feature the Region 2 winner against the 11th Region champion.

The top four teams in the KHSAA RPI for Region 2 exiting the weekend were Lyon County (19-5), Crittenden County (18-4), Hopkins County Central (16-8), and seven-time defending champion Henderson County (15-9).

Frederick Douglass (18-4) is the defending region champion and knocked off defending state champion Sacred Heart last week. They, along with Paul Laurence Dunbar (16-4), Lafayette (16-6), and Western Hills (16-7), are the region’s top four teams in the KHSAA RPI.

The winner will play the winner of Region 1 and Region 7 on Friday, March 13, at 11:00 am, in a loaded bracket for the western Kentucky representatives.

Here are the first round matchups as drawn by the KHSAA, andthe  top four teams in the RPI:

March 11 at 11:00 am

Region 2 (Lyon County (19-5), Crittenden County (18-4), Hopkins County Central (16-8), and defending champion Henderson County (15-9) vs. Region 11 (Frederick Douglass 18-4 and defending champion, Paul Laurence Dunbar (16-4), Lafayette (16-6), and Western Hills (16-7)

March 11 at 1:30 pm

Region 1 (Calloway County (26-1), defending champion Marshall County (16-4), McCracken County (17-7), and Carlisle County (17-6) vs. Region 7 (defending state champion and 18-4 Sacred Heart, Assumption (15-5), Central (10-6), and DuPont Manual (11-8).

March 11 at 6:00 pm

Region 15 (Floyd Central (17-5), defending champion Johnson Central (12-5), Paintsville (16-7), and Pikeville (14-6) vs. Region 9 (Covington Holy Cross (20-3), defending champion Cooper (15-6), Notre Dame (15-6), and Ryle (16-7).

Region 12 (Boyle County (19-3), Pulaski County (15-7), Southwestern (15-7), and West Jessamine (15-10) vs Region 5 (Defending champion Taylor County (20-3), Campbellsville (16-5), North Hardin (12-10), and Green County (17-7)

Region 8 (Defending champion Simon Kenton (23-2), Spencer County (15-6), Woodford County (12-5), and Owen County (12-6) vs Region 16 (Defending champion Ashland Blazer (17-3), Russell (16-6), Boyd County (11-8), and Rowan County (12-9)
