
A pair of freshmen will represent Hopkinsville High School at its final KHSAA State Wrestling Tournament next weekend.
Christon Johnson came in third place in the 120-pound class on Saturday at Henderson County High School. His only loss came to eventual champion Jaxson Mayberry of Union County in the second round of the semifinals.
Johnson came back to beat Paducah Tilghman’s Christopher Moore 22-9 in the consolation semifinal and defeated Fort Campbell’s Eithan Cassell 19-3 for third place. He will carry a 27-5 record into the state tourney.
Ayden Brison opened his day in the 113-pound class with a loss to runner-up Kevin Lopez of Apollo in the first match. He won his next two matches by decision before falling to Paducah Tilghman’s Jake Pulliam in the third-place match. Brison’s record is 23-10.
Hopkinsville had three other wrestlers finish in sixth place. Nicholas Herrera won two matches at 132; Andrew Kraft won three matches at 138; and Kannen Deaton also won three matches at 157.
Others wrestling for Hopkinsville were Garrison Meacham at 144 and Conner Harris at 215.
Hopkinsville totaled 63 points to finish in ninth place as a team – Hoptown’s highest finish in five years.
Johnson and Brison will wrestle the final matches for Hopkinsville High School on Thursday and Friday at the KHSAA State Tournament at Alltech Arena in Lexington.
