Trigg County freshman Cooper Adams has qualified for his first KHSAA state wrestling tournament after placing fourth at the Region 1 Tournament on Saturday at Henderson County.

Adams won his first match with a pin of Apollo’s Brayden Mattingly in the second round. His reward was a semifinal match against defending state champion and nationally ranked Jayden Rainey. Adams was pinned in the first round and dropped to the consolation bracket.

He bounced back with a 12-6 win over Owensboro Catholic’s in the consolation semifinal but suffered a shoulder injury that kept him from wrestling in the third-place match of the 144-pound class.

Adams will take a 23-3 record into next weekend’s state tournament at Alltech Arena in Lexington.

Michael Blevins captured a fifth-place finish in the 175-pound class, pinning Caldwell County’s Jacob Forsythe in the second round. He will be an alternate for the state tourney.

Thomas Lingenfelter finished in sixth place, falling to Calloway County’s Luis Lira in his final match of the day.

Zyerion Mayes had a rough finish after advancing through the consolation bracket. He was disqualified from his match against Owensboro’s Ryan Schaefer and saw his season end with a 20-11 record.

Kaiden Poltorak (138) and Eli Bridges (120) also wrestled for the Wildcats at the region.

As a team, Trigg County finished in 12th place with 36 points.
