Chris Ezell has stepped down as head football coach at Trigg County after five seasons.

Ezell released a statement to YourSportsEdge.com and to social media, saying, “This has not been an easy decision to make, but one I feel is necessary. I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to coach the young men of Trigg County, but it is time for someone else to assume leadership of the program.”

Ezell, who played at Hopkinsville for former Trigg County coach Dixie Jones, came to Trigg County as an assistant coach under Mark Peach in 2020. Peach left after one season to take the coaching job at Danville, and Ezell was elevated to head coach.

The Wildcats were 5-7 in Ezell’s first season and lost to Paducah Tilghman in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs.

The 2022 football team was the best under Ezell, as the Wildcats were 7-4 and set several offensive school records through quarterback Jacob Wease and running back Kelsey Parham. Trigg lost in the first round of the playoffs to Hart County 43-36.

Trigg slipped to 2-8 in 2023 and 3-7 in 2024, missing the playoffs both seasons.

Trigg County dropped to Class 2A in 2025 but only amassed a 2-7 record and missed the postseason for a third straight season, a first for the program since the state expanded the playoffs in 1991.

Ezell was 18-33 in five seasons as head coach.

Ezell called the defense for Trigg County in 2025 after Jones suffered a medical episode and was unable to continue his day-to-day coaching. After the season, offensive coordinator Rusty Goble took a similar position at the new Christian County High School, which will open later this year. Ezell’s brother Jacob will be the athletic director at the new school.

“I want to thank those who support our young men. Trigg County is a special place with great, caring people. This will always be the place that gave me an opportunity to lead a program. We broke multiple individual records in the last five seasons, and 2022 was a special season that I will always remember,” Ezell said.

“Ultimately, it was about the relationships built that I will hold dearest from my time in this position. I am grateful to all the young men who have come through our program over the last five years, as it is more than just a game of football. You have certainly touched my life as well as my family’s.”

The search for a new football coach comes at a time when the school will also be looking for a new athletic director. Doug Gloyd announced earlier this year that he was retiring, effective June 1.

Ezell announced the 2026 schedule earlier this year.
