One of Hopkinsville High School’s most consistent and effective distance runners has announced her commitment to Georgetown College. Senior Lauren Mayes revealed her decision on the same day she competed at the Class 2A State Indoor Track and Field Championships, where she finished 11th in the 3,200‑meter run.

Mayes made five appearances at the KHSAA state cross country meet during her high school career. As a sophomore, she finished 51st, improved to 18th as a junior, and most recently placed 49th last fall.

She finished second at the regional meet last season, a campaign in which she recorded seven top‑10 finishes and victories at Madisonville, McCracken County, and Louisville. Her best cross country time came at last year’s regional meet, where she finished the 3.1-mile course in 20:14 – the eighth‑fastest time in school history.

On the track, Mayes finished third in the region in the 3,200 meters and went on to place 12th at the state meet.

Georgetown College, a private liberal arts institution in Georgetown, Kentucky, competes in the NAIA, and women’s sports at the school include cross country and both indoor and outdoor track and field among a total of 22 varsity programs.

Mayes will be joined at Georgetown by teammate Alexis Herrera-Lovato and Madisonville-North Hopkins’ Katie Gillette.
