How did Providence Academy coach Connor Goetz celebrate winning a fifth straight state title — something that had not been done before — with McDonald’s All-American point guard Maddy Greenway, a Kentucky signee?
“It was really bittersweet. We wanted to send her out on top, so we were excited we won but it was also my last chance to coach her and knowing she would not suit up again for Providence was tough,” the coach said. “As happy as we were that we won, we were all crying in the locker room.”
Greenway just missed a triple-double with 33 points, 13 assists and nine rebounds in the 95-60 title game win. Greenway finished her Minnesota prep career with 5,621 points, the third-highest in high school girls history. She is also the state’s all-time assists leader — as well as the all-time leading goals scorer in soccer.
The game was played on a Saturday night but the school celebration on Monday was a little disrupted by weather.
“I was out shoveling snow on Sunday after we won and then we had a partial delay at school on Monday because of the snow,” he said.
How much snow delays school in Minnesota?
“We had about two feet from Saturday night until Monday morning before it stopped,” Goetz said. “Once we did get to school, there was a lot of recognition, a lot of congratulations, and a lot of happiness. You just can’t believe in a blink of an eye it was all over. She’s been here and the bond with her is so strong.”
Greenway will now be playing in the McDonald’s All-American Game, Jordan Brand Classic and Nike Hoop Summit before arriving at UK in June.
