
The Trigg County Lady Wildcats and the Caldwell County Tigers faced off on Thursday evening at the Trigg County Recreational Complex, and it was the Lady Wildcats were able to defend their home field with a 6-3 win in their season opener.
Caldwell struck first in the top of the first inning with a single from Ellie King, but Trigg answered right back and took the lead 2-1 with a pair of base knocks from Livia Breckel and Tember Oliver.
A couple scoreless innings went by for both teams, but the Lady Tigers ended that by tying the game up at two runs apiece in the top of the fourth with a single from Evie Jo Freeman.
The fourth inning was huge for the Lady Wildcats, as they were able to take control with four runs. Lily Eagleson and Veyda Grinols each got a single to drive in runs, and Lexie Valentine doubled to drive in a pair.
Caldwell scored another run in the top of the seventh, but Trigg was able to get the final groundout to close out the game and get the 6-3 win.
Oliver got the start on the mound for the Lady Wildcats, and she was able to go the distance and pitch all seven innings. She allowed eight hits, but only three runs on her way to racking up six strikeouts.
Alexis Wood started the game for the Lady Tigers, and was able to get a pair of punch outs of her own.
Valentine led the way for Trigg by driving in two of the team’s six runs, while Caldwell’s Daelen Kizzee had a big game of her own with three hits and an RBI in four at-bats.
The Lady Tigers will get their next chance to get their first win of the season on Friday, March 20, against the Lady Colonels of Henderson County. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Caldwell County High School.
As for Trigg, they will be looking to start a win streak in their next one against Marshall County on Saturday, March 21. Their game will start at 11 a.m. at the Trigg County Recreational Complex.
