Colonels Open Season With Big Win at McCracken

Pitchers Andrew Mayes and Eddie Davis combined to pitch a a two-hitter as the Christian County Colonels made an early-season statement with a 2-0, 8-inning road win at McCracken County in the season opener for both teams.

McCracken is the defending 1st Region champ and reached the final four of the state tournament last season.

The game was a pitcher’s duel from the outset, with the Colonels limited to three hits, two of them coming in the top of the 8th when the Colonels scored their runs.

Going into the top of the 8th, Christian County had been held to a single hit, that being a two-out single from Sebastian Dazey in the top of the sixth inning.

The game-winning rally for the Colonels got started in the top of the 8th when Gage Montes reached base on a one-out error from the Mustangs. Montes advanced on a passed ball and then scored on a single from Gavin Mitchell to make it 1-0.

After an intentional walk, Sebastian Dazey singled to left to drive in an insurance run for the Colonels.

Eddie Davis then set the Mustangs down in order in the bottom of the 8th to close out the win.

Andrew Mayes got the start on the mound and went four innings, giving up one hit, striking out three, and walking one.

Davis came on in relief and went four innings, giving up one hit, striking out five, and walking none.

Christian County (1-0) gets back to work Friday evening when the Colonels host Graves County.
