Caldwell Splits Baseball Games with Hancock, McLean

Caldwell County ran its win streak to three on Saturday before suffering a setback in its next game.

The Tigers beat Hancock County 14-4 before falling to host McLean County 6-4 in action in Calhoun.

Ari Wells was 3-for-3 and scored four times in the opener. Wells hit his second homer of the season when he drilled a solo shot to centerfield in the bottom of the third inning.

Caldwell fell behind 2-0 before putting up a five-spot in the bottom of the first inning.

The Tigers scored in every inning — ending the game early on the 10-run mercy rule with four runs in the bottom of the fifth.

David Ginn went 2-for-2 with a double and four runs batted in.

Presten Alfred picked up the win on the mound. He pitched into the fifth inning, allowing three earned runs on six hits. He struck out five and walked two.

Mitchell Phelps got the final two outs for the Tigers.

Against McLean, Caldwell led 2-0 early and trailed just 5-4 through three innings. But the Tigers were blanked over the final four frames as the Cougars held on for the victory.

Drew Stevens was 3-for-3 and scored twice in the contest. Wells was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

Wells suffered the pitching loss but did not give up an earned run. All six McLean tallies were unearned. Wells surrendered just three hits in four innings of work. He struck out six but walked four.

Phelps pitched two scoreless innings.

Caldwell, now 3-2, will play at home on Monday when it entertains Union County.
