Kentucky Mr. Basketball Jake Feldhaus of Madison Central signed with Belmont University in November but recently asked for his release after coach Casey Alexander left to take the head job at Kansas State and Duke assistant Evan Bradds was named the new Belmont coach March 19.

It was a move to give Feldhaus the flexibility to explore other options and the 6-foot-8 standout certainly has plenty of options now.

He had a Zoom call with Bradds Thursday night but also picked up a scholarship offer from South Florida, the American Conference champion this season where Chris Mack was named the new head coach this week. He’s had previous head coaching experience at Xavier, Louisville and Charleston and has a 323-153 overall record.

Madison Central coach Allen Feldhaus said his star player plans to take an official visit to South Florida after the dead period ends April 10 — which works out well since he already had a spring break trip scheduled next week. Jake Feldhaus has made visits to Eastern Kentucky and Western Kentucky already and has heard from numerous schools.

“He narrowed his choices tonight to Belmont, Western Kentucky, South Florida and Wyoming … for  now,” Allen Feldhaus said Thursday night.

Jake Feldhaus averaged 20.7 points, 13 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.8 blocks per game for 30-4 Madison Central last season. He shot 57 percent from the field with 27 3-point goals. He had double-doubles in 30 of 34 games.

Jake Feldhaus, who also was named the Kentucky Gatorade Player of the Year, is the son of former Mason County/UK standout Deron Feldhaus and grandson of legendary high school coach Allen Feldhaus Sr., who also played at Kentucky.

  1. A Kentucky Mr. Basketball who knew he wasn't good enough to play at Kentucky. Travis Perry couldn't cut it and It looks like Trent Noah will be leaving Kentucky too. I look for Jasper Johnson to hit the portal as well. Malachi Moreno may be the only Mr. Basketball that remains on a Wildcat roster. That is a very sad indictment against Kentucky high school basketball.
