Lady Wildcats Finish Season-Best Third at Muhlenberg County

The Trigg County Lady Wildcats turned several strong finishes into a season-best third-place finish at the Muhlenberg County Invitational on Saturday.

Trigg had a pair of runners win their races, giving them 10 points toward their team’s score.

Freshman Sophia Quinteros took first in the 3200-meter run in 14:25.91. She ran a 13:47 at the previous week’s Calloway County Invitational, giving Trigg its fastest time in the event in seven years.

Freshman Brilee Higgins won the 100-meter hurdles for the first time, setting a personal best time of 18.25 seconds. Her time was the seventh fastest in school history and the fastest of any Lady Wildcat not named Alliyah Thomas, who is now setting school records at Brescia University, or Annie Woods, who ran a 17.12 in 2005.

Trigg County was also strong in the relays with a runner-up finish in the 3200-meter relay. The team of Sophia Quinteros, Luci Quinteros, Aniya Dawson, and Veyda Grinols turned in a season-best 11:07.48. The time was the eighth fastest in school history.

The Lady Wildcats added fourth-place finishes in both the 400-meter relay and 800-meter relay. The 4×100 team posted a season-best 56.74, while the 800 squad of Higgins, A.J. Navarro, Kalin Kingston, and Aniya Dawson finished in 2:02.14.

Trigg County’s 1600-meter relay team of Dawson, Caroline Kosak, Dollison, and Alayah Hargrove placed fifth in 5:15.64.

In the distance events, Luci Quinteros finished fourth in the 1600 meters in a personal-best 6:06.34. Alayah Hargrove placed ninth in the 800 meters in a personal-best 3:09.93 and seventh in the 1600 meters in another personal-best 6:58.03.

In the field events, Brooke Humphries finished third in the discus with a throw of 72 feet, 8 inches, and added a fifth-place finish in the shot put at 22 feet, 9.5 inches.

A.J. Navarro was runner-up in the triple jump with a mark of 27 feet, 9 inches, while also placing seventh in the long jump at 12 feet, 11 inches.

Ella Dollison added a fourth-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 14 feet.

Veyda Grinols, an All-Region cross country runner and member of the softball team, ran in her first track meet on Saturday. After running in the 3200 relay to begin the day, Grinols finished fourth in the 400 meters in 1:05.13. It was Trigg’s fastest time in the event in three years.

Aniya Dawson also ran a personal-best 1:10.51 in the 400.

Ella Dollison placed fifth in the 300-meter hurdles in 1:00.14 and also set a personal best in the 200 meters with a 31.79. Higgins added another personal best in the 200 meters, finishing 10th in 29.68.

In the sprints, Aniyah Wharton led the Lady Wildcats in the 100 meters, placing 11th in 15.07, while Kalin Kingston followed in 14th in 16.44.

As a team, Trigg County totaled 85 points to finish third behind Fort Campbell (122) and Kenwood (100) in the nine-team event.
