Anderson County coach Clay Birdwhistell says there is one thing that makes Kentucky women’s basketball coach Kyra Elzy special — she has contact with high school coaches. Elzy got a recent verbal commitment from Anderson County star Amiya Jenkins, a four-star recruit.
“Kyra really worked to have a relationship not just with Meme but me and my coaches,” Birdwhistell said. “It is becoming a lost art really. I was so impressed with the way she handled the recruiting and including the high school coaches. A lot of schools are not like that.”
Elzy said building relationships like that is the key to recruiting.
“You have to have great relationships. As far as the coaches, you have to have good rapport in order for them to allow you in and also to put yourself in the best position with their player,” Elzy said.
“Overall, to be able to give back to our Kentucky high school coaches more specifically, it is really important as the state school and the head coach that I have good relationships and in communication with them.
“I want them to feel like I am available for whatever they need as we are wanting the same thing for Kentucky basketball from grassroots, high school, and college to be the best it can be.”
