Christian County High School has announced its 2023 football schedule which involves a move to Class 6A, District 1, and an early bye week.

The Colonels will kick off the season on Friday, August 25 in the Allen Builders Bowl at Warren East High School. The Colonels will play Franklin-Simpson at 6 pm. The Wildcats were 7-4 last year and lost to Hopkinsville in the first round of the playoffs.

The Colonels’ bye week will be August 25.

Christian County will return to the field on Friday, September 1 against cross-town rival Hopkinsville at the Stadium of Champions at 7 pm. The school system announced earlier this year that the 2023 game would be the final football game between the schools. Hopkinsville and Christian County High are scheduled to combine to create the new Hopkinsville-Christian County Academy. However, bids have not been let on the new school and ground has not been broken on the new school.

Hopkinsville has won the last four meetings between the schools including a 22-0 shutout win in 2022.

Christian County will play a pair of out-of-state schools after the Hopkinsville game. The Colonels will play at South Gibson, Tennessee on Friday, September 15. The Hornets compete in Tennessee’s Class 4A and were 7-5 last year.

On September 15, the Colonels will host Marion, Ill. at the Stadium of Champions.  Marion was 10-3 in 2021 and followed that with a 6-4 record last year.

The Colonels will then play two more non-district games on the road.

Christian County will play at Caldwell County on September 22. The Colonels won the game on the field last year 18-9 although the outcome was later declared a forfeit win for Caldwell County after Christian County was determined to use an ineligible player.

The Colonels will play at former Class 5A district foe Bowling Green on September 29. The Purples won last year’s game 50-7 and lost to Frederick Douglass in the Class 5A championship game.

Christian County will then play district games over the next three weeks and will be assured of a postseason berth.

The Colonels will host Daviess County on October 6. The Colonels and Panthers last met in 2004 with Christian County claiming a 37-20 win. Daviess County was 7-5 last year.

Christian County will play at McCracken County on October 13. McCracken was 2-9 last year and lost to the Colonels 27-20. McCracken leads the all-time series with Christian County 4-1.

Christian County’s final district game will be at Henderson County on October 20.  Henderson County was 10-3 last year and handed Christian County a 43-14 setback. Henderson has won three straight games in the series with Christian County’s last win coming in 2017.

The Colonels will close out the regular season on October 27 at the Stadium of Champions against perennial Class 2A power Mayfield.

The schools last met in 1990 with Mayfield winning 27-7.

Christian County’s 2023 schedule only has four home games. Zach Self is serving as the interim head coach of the football program after Blake Ladson did not finish the 2022 season as head coach. No reason was given for Ladson’s absence by school officials.
