Kyndle Mahaffey handled her first state track and field meet like a champ — a state champ.
The Caldwell County eighth grader won the adapted 100-meter dash in her wheelchair at the Class 2A State Meet in Lexington. Her time was 35.06 seconds, just missing the state mark of 34.98 seconds set by Wayne County’s Taylor West in 2013.
Mahaffey added a state champion medal to her region championship in her inaugural year of competition.
Despite being born with Myelomeningocele Spina Bifida, she has decided to not let it impede her goal of competing and winning for the Caldwell County High School track and field team.
After her state champion run, the emotions hit Mahaffey when it came time to thank her teammates, parents, and coaches. She also has her sights set on 2024.
