While the final score may not show it, the Trigg County Lady Wildcats are getting better.

Trigg County opened the season with a 68-29 loss to Calloway County at Wildcat Gym. On Monday, Calloway advanced to the championship game of the Class 2A sectionals with a 68-32 win.

In the season opener, Calloway County raced out to a 26-3 lead and led by as many as 42 points.

On Monday, Calloway’s biggest first half lead was 19 points and the Lady Lakers enjoyed a 17-point halftime lead.

Madison Futrell and Jaiden Koch combined for 10 straight points in the third quarter as the Lady Lakers built their lead to 26 points.

Trigg County got to within 21 points early in the fourth quarter but Calloway ended the game on a 15-2 run that saw the Lady Wildcats unable to score over the final 5:13 of the game.

Despite the cold streak, Trigg County shot better from the field (41%) and the free throw line (62%).

However, Trigg’s glaring weakness the entire season has been turnovers. 30 more of them on Monday led to 37 Calloway points. It also meant 30 fewer shots than Calloway who hit 47% from the floor.

The Lady Lakers dominated the paint, outscoring Trigg 46-20. Koch finished with 21 points and nine steals, while Saylor Lowe added 16 points and nine rebounds. Jaycee Crouch hit a trio of threes and finished with 18 points for Calloway, who improved to 12-2 with its 14th straight win over Trigg County dating back to 1984. Calloway leads the all-time series 21-2.

Reese Bush led the Lady Wildcats with 12 points, and Veyda Grinols scored 11 points and added four rebounds.

Calloway County will play Hopkins County Central in Friday’s sectional championship at Wildcat Gym. The Lady Storm took down Paducah Tilghman 59-27 in the other semifinal.

Trigg County gets 10 days to prepare for a January 12 road game at McLean County and then three straight district games as they look to improve their position in the district standings.
