A year ago Javeon Campbell still had not played his first high school football game. Today he’ll make his college choice at 11:30 a.m. on 247Sports’ YouTube Channel.

The 6-5, 265-pound Campbell had a sensational season for Western Hills in 2023 as a junior and had 14 1/2 sacks to sky rocket up the national rankings. He’s now the top-rated high school player in Kentucky and the 109th ranked overall player in the 2025 recruiting class by 247Sports. He is also rated as the nation’s 15th best defensive lineman.

He has a final four of Alabama, Auburn, Miami and Kentucky. There has been a lot of recent buzz for Alabama but UK associate coach Vince Marrow has worked non-stop to land Campbell, a four-star recruit.

Western  Hills coach Simon Vanderpool first saw Campbell playing basketball after he got the head job at Western Hills. He convinced him to try football last season because he saw his “combination of size, speed and tenacity” was something few players have.

“I really think he could have a chance to play on Sundays (in the NFL),” Vanderpool said. “He’s a great kid from a great family who really works hard to make himself the best he can be.”

If Campbell picks UK, it could start a huge week for the Wildcats. Florida four-star receiver Samari Reed will make his college choice Wednesday. The 6-2, 185-pound Reed had 56 catches for 1,311 yards and 15 touchdowns lasts year. He has visited Mississippi, Clemson, West Virginia, Penn State and Kentucky.

Ohio three-star offensive tackle Jermiel Atkins will name his college choice on Thursday. The 6-8, 290-pound Atkins is a top-50 offensive tackle and top-20 prospect in the state of Ohio. He has visited Arizona State, Virginia Tech and Kentucky and could be another Ohio commitment for Marrow.

On Friday Oho four-star defensive back Dawayne Galloway will announce his college choice. The 6-1, 175-pound Galloway is a top 200 recruit and  top-25 cornerback in the 2025 class by 247Sports. He had five interceptions in 2023 and has been timed in 10.48 seconds in the 100-meter dash.  He has visited  West Virginia, Purdue, Syracuse, and Kentucky.

One Response

  1. Campbell was a giant get. Alabama and Auburn also went all in on him and he committed to Kentucky over the top teams. I thought he would go to Alabama I’m glad I was wrong. Now if we can just get Galloway we will have seven 4* recruits and four high 3* recruits. This is shaping up to be one of Stoops best classes. I would only add a couple more high school recruits then I would dip into the transfer portal. If we can get a top 20high school class and a top10 transfer class we should end up with a top 15 class overall. We had a great recruiting class in 2020, 2022, 2024, and now possibly 2025. That means we will have great upperclassmen this year and great freshman redshirt freshman and sophomores. So after 2024 we will still be in good hands. I’m super excited this year and I’m anxious to see how it all molds together. If we can keep Stoops for the next 3 years we will win or tie for the SEC championship very soon. Another thing we have going for us is continuity. Stoops has been here now for 13 seasons? So the kids being recruited now if they watch college football Stoops is all they know at Kentucky. Plus we’ve had some great seasons under Stoops. Marrow is a staple at Kentucky as well. We’ve been a middle of the pack team in the SEC and now we will start climbing that ladder at little more this year. We also have to get the younger guys some snaps without burning redshirts. I don’t want to see Brock throwing passes in the second half against Murray state. If we get up by 3 or 4 touchdowns it’s time to put Gavin and the rest of the second string in the games. We can’t afford a ton of injuries this year. We have a bad habit of playing starters every game all game. We need to blow some teams out and get our youngsters some playing time as well.
