After missing out on the 4th-Region tournament last season with a loss to Franklin-Simpson in its postseason opener, the Todd County Central volleyball team cruised past the Lady Wildcats on Monday to get some revenge and advance to a district title matchup with top-seeded Logan County.
The Lady Rebels were a little slow out of the game in the opening set on Monday, trailing 4-1 before surging into the lead with a 6-1 run.
Allyssa Wofford’s back-to-back kills gave Todd Central a 12-10 advantage, and Shelby Holderman’s ace capped an 8-2 run to make it 20-14. The Lady Wildcats got as close as 23-20, but Wofford finished them off with another kill for a five-point win.
Another slow start left the Lady Rebels trailing 5-1 in the second set after a kill by Logan’s Annsleigh Bonner. Todd Central answered with a 5-0 spurt, including a pair of aces by Chloe Collins, for a 6-5 edge.
Consecutive aces by Mackenzie Phelps nosed the Lady Wildcats back in front at 13-12 before Wofford’s ace gave the Lady Rebels a 17-14 lead and forced a Logan County timeout.
Bonner served up a couple of aces to cut the Lady Rebel lead to a point at 23-22, but a kill by Aubri Penick helped Todd Central hold on for a three-point win.
In control at 2-0, the Lady Rebels led by as many as four points early in the third before back-to-back aces from Phelps gave Logan County its first lead of the set at 13-11.
Wofford delivered a pair of kills to provide some breathing room at 19-17, and the Lady Rebels never trailed again. Logan County again trimmed the margin to a point, but two more kills for Penick closed out a 25-22 victory.
The Lady Rebels improved to 18-15 with their third win over the Lady Wildcats. They’ll be looking to extend a three-game winning streak when they face Logan County on Tuesday.
The Lady Cougars won both regular-season meetings with the Lady Rebels by 3-0 scores. Logan County has dominated the district since joining in 2010, winning all 14 tournament championships.
