It’s no surprise which game that Tulane transfer Kam Williams knows might be a little more special for him and his family than any other Kentucky game this season.
The 6-foot-8 sophomore is from Lafayette, La. That’s about an hour away from Baton Rouge and the LSU campus.
“It’s like a hometown game, so I might have family and stuff there, but I don’t really treat anybody higher than somebody else because it’s just basketball at the end of the day. It’s definitely about my vibes. Nothing different,” Williams said Tuesday.
Williams also said Tuesday that Otega Oweh, UK’s leading scorer last year, has been a huge help to him already during summer practices.
“He’s a veteran to the team. So if there’s something that I am kind of questioning, I just ask him and he tells me right then and there,” Williams said.“I want to be pretty much as good or almost better as he is. I try to play him as much as I can to upgrade pretty much every basketball aspect that I can.”
Williams has learned how physically strong Oweh is but also how he uses his instincts to score.
“He knows how to attack a defense and the different gaps in the defense. I kind of just try to pick up on any type of play style that he may have that’s not in my game, and try to apply it,” Williams said.
Williams averaged 9.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.4 steals, 1.3 assists, and 1.1 blocks per outing last season and shot 41 percent from 3-point range. He’s already been mentioned as a potential first-round pick in the 2026 NBA Draft by some NBA draft analysts.
The sophomore has already impressed teammate Jayden Quaintance, an Arizona state transfer projected as a 2026 NBA Draft lottery pick.
“I feel like he’s gonna surprise a lot of people. Really athletic, he can get downhill, get on the rim, really good shooter, like, really consistent, high arc shooter,” Quaintance said Tuesday. “I feel like he’s got all of the tools offensively and defensively that he needs to get where he wants to go. He’s gonna be a major for us this year.”
