Caldwell Continues Strong Offensive Play in Rout of Trigg

derrin-2

Derrin Boyd scored 25 points to lead five Caldwell County players in double figures as the Tigers routed Trigg County 81-46 Friday on homecoming night in Princeton.

It was Caldwell’s biggest win over Trigg since an 82-30 decision in 1996.

The Tigers, now 17-8, continued their strong shooting in the contest. Caldwell made 54.5 percent of its field goal attempts (30 of 55) and connected on six of 13 3-pointers for 46.2 percent from behind the arc. The Tigers were even better at the free throw line, making 15 of 16 charity tosses for 93.8 percent.

Trigg (9-16) led 3-0 early on a three-point play by Jakobe Bridges. But once Caldwell got the lead it didn’t give it back.

Boyd scored nine points in the first 8 minutes as Caldwell went up 15-8 after one period.

The Tigers continued to expand their advantage in the second quarter. A 3-pointer by John Davis at the halftime horn sent Caldwell to the locker room with a 39-20 bulge.

The Wildcats could not put a dent in the margin after the break. Instead, Caldwell pushed its lead to 33 points, 65-32, through three quarters.

The Tigers went up by as much as 40 points in the final stanza on the way to the 35-point triumph.

Boyd added eight rebounds and six assists to his game-high point total for Caldwell.

Davis finished with 16 points and eight rebounds for the Tigers while Cole Smiley totaled 13 points and five boards. Cayden Fraliex had 11 points and five rebounds and Adarius Riley added 10 points.

Trigg got 10 points from Hayden Cunningham and nine from Kendric Adams. Bridges finished with eight points.

The Tigers face a huge test in their next game, visiting 2nd Region favorite University Heights Academy in Hopkinsville on Tuesday. The Blazers are 24-4 and already own an All ‘A’ Classic state championship this season.

Trigg will host Ballard Memorial on Tuesday.
