For a half Saturday, the Christian County Colonels had Campbell County right where they wanted them. The Colonels defense was turning away the Camels attack, and the Colonels offense did enough to get to a 1-0 halftime lead.

Then, after getting their ears bent by the head coach, the Camels exploded for four goals in a nine minute span early in the second half. Campbell County also elevated their play on the defensive end and pulled out to a 5-1 win at the Boots & Butts Soccer Classic at the Stadium of Champions.

Christian County battled hard through the opening forty minutes, keeping the Camels out of the net. The Colonels got to the lead when Gavrie Watkins’ shot deflected off a defender into the net at the 34:00 mark to put Christian County up 1-0, a lead that would hold until the half. The Colonels got solid defensive play from McKay Dunn, Marcus Crockam, and Elijah Deason.

At halftime, the Camels received some “encouraging” words from their head coach. The second half then turned out to be a completely different story.

Just four minutes into the second half, Sam Jones drilled a shot from left front into the lower right front corner of the net to make it 1-1. A minute later, Luke Baker broke open coming down the right side and drilled the shot to put the Camels up 2-1.

The onslaught continued when Trey Penrod scored off a header at the 52:00 mark to extend the Campbell County lead to 3-1. Brayden Reynolds scored a minute later to finish the blitz and push the lead out to 4-1. The Camels would add a goal at the 77:00 mark to finish out the scoring.

The Camels defense also stepped up in the second half of play, affording the Colonels very few chances to get good looks at the net.

With the loss, the Colonels dropped into the losers bracket of the tournament, and saw their record fall to 1-6-1.
