Governor Beshear Offers Update on College Sports

Governor Andy Beshear said Monday he is continuing to monitor the return of college athletics in the state as sports teams begin to workout ahead of what is hoped to be a full schedule of fall sports.

The governor said events indoors, including non-sports activities such as concerts, will have a tough time meeting state guidelines before outdoor sports.

The governor said outdoor sports may meet an earlier deadline so long as masks continue to be worn by people not actively participating.

Beshear said athletic conferences will have the greatest say in whether games begin on time this fall.

After watching the Belmont Stakes run in front of an empty house Saturday, Beshear said they are still working to have a plan in place for the Kentucky Derby, which was moved from the first Saturday in May to September 5th.  He added he doesn’t expect the race to run in front of an empty grandstand at Churchill Downs.

Kentucky’s Healthy at Work guidelines allow for the start of most youth athletic games in Kentucky to begin next Monday.
