All-American Rhyne Howard figures to benefit from the new name, image and likeness

Athletic directors, coaches, and even some fans have wondered how the new name, image, and likeness freedom college athletes are going to have starting July 1 might impact team chemistry. The worry is that if Players A and B make a lot of endorsement dollars but other players on the team do not that it could create resentment/jealousy on the team.

I got to talk to UK junior basketball player Emma King Saturday and asked if the name, image, and likeness had been a big topic of discussion yet on her team.

“We are supposed to be meeting with compliance soon and the coaches are going to talk to us and our parents,” King said. “There are a lot of unknowns. I am excited to see what comes out of it and who benefits in what ways. But it really is not something I am super concerned about.”

King understands All-American Rhyne Howard is the women’s player destined to have the most financial opportunities. She’s not only one of UK’s best players but one of the nation’s best players.

“I think we understand that anything that comes Rhyne’s way is something she deserves more than anybody,” King said. “She is so good and so humble. She’s never one to rub it in. She deserves all she can get and should get it. I don’t see anyone on our team having a problem with that.”
