The Chick-fil-A “Triple A” is designed to pay tribute to area athletes who excel in the areas of academics and achievement, as well as athletics. In the case of University Heights Academy’s Evelyn Cotthoff you can even add another “A”, that being in the area of artistic ability. She was a member of the Lady Blazer volleyball team and track and field team during the 2021-2022 school year.

Cotthoff, who is beginning her sophomore year at University Heights is a great example of someone who contributes on the court, in the classroom, and in her community. And, she does so in a number of ways.

In the classroom, during her freshman year, Cotthoff made the UHA Headmaster’s List four out of four quarters. Additionally, Evelyn was the recipient of the Philosophy and Religion high-grade award for freshmen.

During the 2021 varsity Academic Team District competition. Evelyn was among the Blazers to achieve a Top 5 finish. She took home a 4th place finish in the Arts/Humanities category. She was also involved in the KAAC Governor’s Cup competition and the quick recall program.

She was able to attain these educational honors while being active in her school community at the highest level. Evelyn is involved in the Junior Beta Club, Environmental Club, Key Club, and the Art and Literature Club, where she has been serving as Assistant Editor. The Art and Literature Club takes writings and art from students and displays them online and in a published magazine.

Eveyln’s community involvement does not stop with her “school community.” She has assisted in the Challenge House program; aided instructors in the Kids in College Can Soar program at Hopkinsville Community College; and has been very active with activities at her church, First Christian Church in Hopkinsville. She is also a student member on the steering committee at Jeffers Bend Environmental Center in Hopkinsville.

Eveyln’s volleyball and track and field coach Faye Hendricks was asked about this outstanding young lady.

“Evelyn Cotthoff was born in the wrong time period. Or maybe she has just been collecting ideas from exploring a variety of eras her whole life and trying them out in a unique way. She is what I might characterize as Renaissance Grunge or Classical Punk, with her diverse interests and talents and a unique and vintage fashion sense which spans the 70’s-90’s. Evelyn is a quirky, inquisitive, artistic, talented, fearless young lady and as a younger sister of two brainy brothers is accustomed to arguing for what she wants or believes. She has inherited an impressive intellect from her parents, but maintains her own voice in conversation and composition.”

In addition to academics and achievement, there is her art.

Evelyn says “I have always drawn and painted and colored. I literally started with stick figures and I have tried oil painting, charcoals, and watercolors. I enjoy cartoonist-type art, and I am doing more abstract and figurative work now. I think pop art and collage type is cool and fun to do. I like museums and art galleries. Currently, my favorite artist is Egon Schiele.

In May of 2021, Evelyn Cotthoff was the winner of the Hopkinsville Public Library’s Summer Reading Bookmark Design Contest. The theme was “Wild About Books,” and her design was voted first place in the ages 12-18 category. Her artwork was printed on bookmarks given out during the library’s Summer Reading Program.

Evelyn was involved in the 2020 “Building Purple Empathy Through the Visual Arts” project, along with several other University Heights students. The purpose of the project was to build “purple empathy” through the visual arts. According to the Unity Flag Project website, the formation of purple is an optical blending of blue and red coming together to engage in civil bipartisan discourse through the visual arts.

She had a piece of art on display at Hopkinsville Community College while she was in elementary school, and has contributed every year since 2013 to the art and lit magazine. And, she enjoys doing the makeup for musical productions.

Turns out, there are a lot of “A”s for this week’s Chick-fil-A “Triple A”, Evelyn Cotthoff, from University Heights Academy.

  1. I enjoyed watching Evelyn shift from a tween to a teen four years ago. The promise she showed then is already being realized, and I know more fulfillment will unfold in the coming years.
