Trigg County had dominated the stat sheet against St. Mary Monday but found itself tied with the Lady Vikings heading into the waning minutes of the soccer match. Instead of the tie, Alyssa Southwood banged home a shot from 25 yards out to give the Lady Wildcats a 3-2 win.

Southwood’s goal from 25 yards out came on Trigg’s 35th shot of the night as the Lady Wildcats controlled possession for the first 60 minutes.  Lania Hite scored the game’s first goal on Trigg’s 26th shot in the 34th minute as the Lady Wildcats were able to finally capitalize on the abundance of offensive chances.

St. Mary answered three minutes later when Vanessa Baker found the net from 25 yards out.  A Trigg County foul in the box just before halftime gave Katie O’Neill a penalty shot chance she knocked home to put St. Mary up 2-1 at the half.

Trigg outshot St. Mary 22-3 in the first half.

Jayne Dearth took a pass from Allie Hill in the first minute of the second half and scored on the cross to tie the match 2-2.

St. Mary saw more chances in the second half as Trigg appeared to tire. However, the Lady Wildcats were able to double down and attack the net in the final five minutes before Southwood’s game-winner.

Trigg put 35 shots on the stat sheet with St. Mary goalie Kaitlynn Burrus making 22 saves.

Trigg improves to 5-3 and will play at Lyon County Tuesday.
