After wasting some good chances early in Thursday night’s matchup with Russellville, the Trigg County boys’ soccer team crumbled as the game went on in a 4-1 loss to the visiting Panthers.

The Wildcats have managed only 10 goals this season on the way to a 2-6-1 record.  The loss is only the third in 20 meetings with the Panthers and the first since 1996.

Trigg looked set to take the lead in the first five minutes, but Timmy Mendez’s shot from close range hit the post and the game remained scoreless until the final minutes of the first half.  Russellville’s Avery Flener caught the Wildcats napping on a throw-in and ran behind the defense and chipped in from close range over Trigg goalkeeper Joseph Crawford.

Flener found the back of the net again inside the first 10 minutes of the second half, and it was downhill for the Wildcats from there.

Dalton Gilbert added a third with 20 minutes left to play, and Dustin Brown took advantage of miscommunication in the Wildcat defense to tap in a fourth.

Trigg County finally got on the board in the final minutes of the game when Mendez connected for his third goal of the season.

The victory is Russellville’s eighth in nine tries for a 10-3-3 record.
