
Union County put up 563 yards of offense and claimed a 46-27 win over Trigg County Friday to claim the top seed in Class 3A District 1.
The Braves had two backs rush for over 100 yards and had 368 yards rushing in the contest. Union gashed its way to 11 yards per carry, including 17 per carry in the first half.
The Braves wasted little time jumping ahead, recovering a fumble on the opening kickoff and moving 42 yards in two plays. Corithian Seales-Portee capped the scoring drive with an 8-yard scoring drive 32 seconds into the game.
Trigg County quickly answered when Jacob Wease hit Jhaden Vaughn on the first of three touchdown passes in the game. This one covered 50 yards and tied the game at 7-7.
Union County came right back and scored on a 20-yard run by freshman Jarren Johnson with 10:11 left in the opening quarter for a 13-7 lead.
Both defenses found their footing the rest of the quarter as neither team reached the end zone. Rylan George caught a 7-yard scoring pass from Cannon Sheffer to put the Braves up 19-7 one minute inside the second quarter. Sheffer finished 11-of-16 for 195 yards and three touchdowns.
Wease and Vaughn hooked up on a 47-yard touchdown pass for the second time in the half.
Sheffer connected with Kanye Pollard on a 14-yard touchdown pass and then added a 31-yard run of his own for a 33-13 Union County lead at halftime.
Both Seales-Portee, who rushed for 195 yards on 13 carries, and Johnson, who ran for 104 yards on 12 carries, topped 100 yards for the Braves as part of their 368-yard night.
Trigg County only had 92 rushing yards with most of that coming in the second half. Wease was 17-of-43 passing for 305 yards. His 43 attempts are the second-most in school history. He has thrown for 1,931 yards which are the second-most in a season.
Vaughn caught three passes for 132 yards and three scores — the second-most in a game in TCHS history.
Trigg County finished with 397 yards of offense and ran nine more plays than Union County. The Braves were penalized 14 times for 120 yards, while Trigg was flagged eight times for 87 yards.
Trigg County dropped to 4-5 and will be the No. 3 seed in the playoffs. They will travel to No. 2 seed Paducah Tilghman in two weeks in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs.
Union County improves to 7-1 and will host Webster County in the first round.
