Alex Miller got another UK fan, Maria Montgomery, to join him in his first music video.
Garrard County’s Alex Miller is a life-long University of Kentucky sports fan and was thrilled recently when he got to sing the national anthem before the Kentucky-Tennessee football game in Lexington.
That’s why it was no surprise when he was ready to put together his first official music video, the former American Idol contestant turned to another Big Blue Nation fan — Maria Montgomery — for help.
The video, “Don’t Let the Barn Door Hit Ya,” showcases both Miller and Montgomery, a model and Kentucky basketball game host, was shot in downtown Lancaster and at the farm of Miller’s grandfather, G.B. Miller, in Garrard County. Several other family members and friends are also in the video.

Cinematographer Steve Kinney made the most of the “country boy vs. city girl” concept in the video capturing the differences in the characters while also portraying the dichotomy between the beauty of the farm and the realities of rural life.
The video starts with Montgomery impatiently waiting for Miller to pick her up in his pickup truck to take her to his farm. He immediately puts her to work carrying buckets and bales of hay to get ready for that night’s barn dance. Montgomery tries to do the farm work in her high-heeled sandals which causes a few complications.
What I liked is that Miller and Montgomery come across perfectly with his country boy charm and her facial expressions of boredom, frustration, and maybe even hour.
The funniest part to me was when a Southern meal of fried chicken with all the fixings sent Montgomery running for the outhouse where she is forced to fight a sticky door and Alex’s maternal grandpa for relief.
“That took seven or eight takes,” Miller said. “Maria couldn’t quit laughing, but my granddad took it all in stride.”
Not long after that it was “peace out” for Montgomery as she left the farm in his pickup truck.
Miller invited friends and family to the barn for the video and it’s clear how much fun they all had hearing him sing and perform.
“Well, the performance looks really natural thanks to Steve,” Miller said. “But my dad and I both fell setting things up and we got banged around pretty good. You’d think the city girl would take the tumble, but oh no … for a farm boy whose first word was ‘tractor,’ I guess I’m pretty clumsy.”
The single, “Don’t Let The Barn Door Hit Ya,” was released last month on Billy Jam Records.
