The 2020-21 Trigg County girls’ basketball season was a bizarre one from start to finish.
The Lady Wildcats had a five-game winning streak in January but then, didn’t beat a team outside the 5th District after January 31. However, two of those district wins came in the post-season tournament that saw them win their third straight district title – something the program had never done before.
Armed with a home game in the first round of the region tournament and a favorable draw, the Lady Wildcats bowed out on opening night after a 17 point performance in a loss to Union County.
Coach Cory Coble is hoping for more ups and fewer downs this year with two starters and two key reserves returning from last year‘s 10-14 team.
Senior Marleigh Reynolds had a breakout season for the Lady Wildcats last year. She led the team in scoring and rebounding with 11 points and nine boards a game. She also shot 50% from the field. Keeping her on the floor and out of foul trouble will be a huge key for the Lady Wildcats.
Junior Olivia Noffsinger returns after playing through an injury for most of last year. She still averaged eight points a game and lead the Lady Wildcats in assists and steals. Coble said he expects to move her to the two-guard to get her more shots on offense.
Tajah Grubbs will take over at the point guard spot. She is a pass-first guard and gives the Lady Wildcats a quick option when facing full-court pressure.
Junior Kara Hyde returns after scoring three points a game and was second on the team in 3-pointers made last year. Junior Audrey Alexander and junior Sarah Sink will compete for the fifth starting position. Both players bring something different to the floor. Alexander is a better offensive player while Sink is better at the defensive end and rebounds more.
Sophomores Evonna McGee and Landi Rogers, and freshman Reese Bush will give Coble some depth, however, this will not be one of the deeper teams Coble has had at Trigg County.
The Lady Wildcats will only play three home games in November and December. They open the season Monday at home against Todd County Central.
Trigg County had some offensive issues late in the season last year. They will need to overcome those as they will play in an improved district that sees both Crittenden County and Lyon County return their top scorer and rebounder.
